Adverbial clause

An adverbial clause is a clause that functions as an adverb. In other words, it contains a subject (explicit or implied) and a predicate, and it modifies a verb.

• I saw Joe when I went to the store. (explicit subject I)
• He sat quietly in order to appear polite. (implied subject he)

According to Sidney Greenbaum and Randolph Quirk, adverbial clauses function mainly as adjuncts or disjuncts. In these functions they are like adverbial phrases, but due to their potentiality for greater explicitness, they are more often like prepositional phrases (Greenbaum and Quirk,1990):

• We left after the speeches ended. (Is it an adverbial clause, adverbial phrase, or prepositional phrase?)
• We left after the end of the speeches.(Is it an adverbial clause, adverbial phrase, or prepositional phrase?)

Contrast adverbial clauses with adverbial phrases, which do not contain a clause.

Kinds of adverbial clauses

1.      Times clauses

These clauses are used to say when something happens by referring to a period of time or to another event.

when, before, after, since, while, as, as long as, until,till, etc. (conjunctions that answer the question "when?"); hardly, scarcely, no sooner, etc.

example

·           Shut the door before you go out.

·           You may begin when(ever) you are ready.

·           While he was walking home, he saw an accident.

·           By the time I arrive, Alex will have left. No sooner had she entered than he gave an order.

2.      Conditional clauses

These clauses are used to talk about a possible situation and its consequences

if, unless, if, even if, unless, in the even that, or in even that, in case, provided (that), providing (that), on condition that, if only, suppose (that), supposing (that), dll.

example

·           If I see him, I will invite him to the party tomorrow.

·           She would forgive her husband everything, if only he would come back to her.

·           Suppose (that) your house burns down, do you have enough insurance to cover such a loss.

·           In case a robbery occurs in the hotel, the management must be notified at once.

3.      Purpose clauses

These clauses are used to indicate the purpose of an action.

(in order) that, so that, in the hope that, to the end that, lest, in case, dll.

·           They went to the movie early (in order) to find the best seats.

·           She bought a book so (that) she could learn English

·           He is saving his money so that he may take a long vacation.

·           I am working night and day in the hope that I can finish this book soon.

4.      Reason clauses

These clauses are used to indicate the reason for something.

because, since, as, given

example

·         Because he was sleepy, he went to bed.

·         Since he's not interested in classical music, he decided not to go to the concert.

·         As she had nothing in particular to do, she called up a friend and asked her if she wanted to take in a movie.

·         Inasmuch as the two government leaders could not reach an agreement, the possibilities for peace are still remote.

5.      Result clauses

These clauses are used to indicate the result of something

So, that, , so that, in the hope that, to the end that, lest, in case

Example

·           They went to the movie early (in order) to find the best seats.

·           She bought a book so (that) she could learn English

·           He is saving his money so that he may take a long vacation.

·           I am working night and day in the hope that I can finish this book soon.

6.      Concessive clauses

These clauses are used to make two statements, one of which contrasts with the other or makes it seem surprising

 although, though, even though, whereas, even if, in spite of, as the time

·           As the time you were sleeping, we were working hard.

·           Mary wanted to stop, whereas I wanted to go on.

·           Although it is late, we'll stay a little longer.

·           He is very friendly, even if he is a clever student.

7.      Place clauses

These clauses are used to talk about the location or position of something.

where, wherever, anywhere, everywhere, etc. (conjunctions that answer the question "where?")

·           They sat down wherever they could find empty seats

·           The guard stood where he was positioned.

·           Where there is a will, there is a way.

·           Where there is poverty, there we find discontent and unrest.

8.      Clauses of manner

These clauses are used to talk about someone's behaviour or the way something is done.

as, like, the way

example

·           He did as I told him.

·           You may finish it how you like.

·           They may beat us again, like they did in 1978.

9.      Clauses of exclamation

Exclamations are used to express anger, fear, shock, surprise etc. They always take an exclamation mark (!).

SHORT STORY

Previously, you certainly are not foreign to the same thing as falling in love. Who is who do not know, everyone can feel it except maybe that is not normal of course. Okay My name Reni's continue that type of person I am outgoing, I like joking and I was fussy. At that time I create a show and there my photos with friends. My photos grouped in one group there are 6 people consisting of 2 men and 4 women, including me. I feel my friend like the same thing as rina Rino, yes because I am fussy and like to talk the person I was joking with rina because who does not suspicious of the attention-seeking attitude rina with Rino and their photos together and eat together. I know the nature of them both because I was their friend.

Rina was the type of person who simply like the same man, if there are men who care little with him, he would have minded if he would instantly fall in love but in my opinion it is a temporary feeling wrote that he felt because he did feel comfortable with man. Meanwhile, Rino is the type of man who is not good because she was feeling like permainkan women and worse he was matre he only want to deal with a wealthy woman alone while rina was just a simple girl
Initially I plan to unite them. I like to joke with them and then suddenly I deliberately leave them alone. And my hunch was right rina rina like the Rino but still would not be honest with me if it turns out he likes with Rino.

But suddenly I was shocked when Rino rina say if it was not the equal of him because it is not rich rina rina and because of the earlier love with Rino, Rino there I knew that if it does not like rina rina and love unrequited. I can only tell that the wheel is spinning Rino continue surely one day every person will experience under and not always they are above

HOLIDAY WITH MY FRIENDS

OK I will tell all about my experience when going out with my friends including the experience that meyenangkan. OK this at first when I planned to go together during the school holiday. Because I had friends that enough approximately in one group had approximately 15 people, many opinions that made us confused to want to go where. There are those that every to the peak, there is yg every to the zoo, and still many others. But all of us decided to go to Ancol because that was not too far and his price also was enough to be covered.

After all of us agreed to go to Ancol finally we decided to go there by using the motor and gathering in one of our friend's houses. We  gathered at 9 o'clock pagi. when arrive in ancol we at once stopped at the edge of the coast. My friend there is one that is playing the swing, there were those who rose to the tree trunk while photographs and there also are those that sat in the coastal bank while feeling the semi-winch of the coastal wind.

When being finished prayed dzuhur, when we were discussing was someone the boatman offered his boat for us rent. We agreed to lease the boat to go round the coast. When we wanted to get on the boat, his boat wobbled made us have difficulty getting on him. When all of my friends have gotten on the boat and the boat was ready to sail. During in the middle of the trip of the coastal wind was increasingly tight and the wave was increasingly high. When that his boat wobbled fast and the matter that I could not forget one of my friends there is one that is hysterical the fear. That made me and the other friend laughed saw his face that was pale because of the fear

An arrival in our coastal bank continue to laughter and after that we planned to have lunch. When we looked for the place to have lunch suddenly rain descended densely. We continued to continue the trip to look for the place ate. Finally we found the place ate and we planned to take shelter while having lunch in the place. Apart from rain was still heavy so as we were waiting for quite a long time until his rain to stop. When his rain stopped we planned to come home and the day to the very tiring day and not forgotten remembered the memory when rising the boat.
